Tackle Money Management and Score a Trip to the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil

Visa’s nationwide financial literacy program with AKPK and local banks continues to deliver financial education to Malaysians through the Financial Football competition and free learning materials

Visa and Malaysia’s Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) have entered into the second year of their collaboration to deliver financial education and to give Malaysians the chance to win a trip to the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil.

Launched at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, Visa and the AKPK’s collaboration follows the success of the 2013 program which kicked off about the same time last year with the Visa Financial Football Competition. The 2013 Financial Football Competition helped Grand Prize winner, Zul Aswat Bin Hamdan, 34, from Negeri Sembilan, fulfil his dream of taking his wife to the 2013 Confederations Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, while providing financial education materials to thousands of Malaysians.

“We are pleased to be continuing our collaboration with the AKPK in our commitment to advancing financial education efforts in Malaysia and to achieve our goals of equipping Malaysians with sound financial knowledge that will help them thrive financially throughout their lives. Riding on the success of the 2013 competition, we hope to bring financial education to more people by harnessing the popularity of the world’s most popular sport,” said Mr. Stuart Tomlinson, Visa Country Manager, Malaysia.

Mdm. Koid Swee Lian, CEO of AKPK, said: “AKPK is very pleased to continue our collaboration with Visa to further promote financial literacy to all Malaysians. Financial literacy programs like these will benefit every member of Malaysian society by helping people gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed financial choices. This is especially necessary during this period of increasing cost of living and the need to be financially prudent.”

“For nearly two decades, Visa has been developing financial literacy programs around the world to help teach individuals how to spend, save and budget more wisely and responsibly. I believe the 2014 Financial Football Malaysia competition we are launching today will appeal to many Malaysians, and like last year, entertaining as it teaches the fundamentals of finance,” added Mr. Tomlinson.

This year’s Financial Football Competition is also supported by seven of the country’s leading financial institutions – Aeon Credit Services, Bank Islam, BSN, Hong Leong Bank, Maybank, Public Bank and UOB – who also host links to Financial Football through their websites and promote financial education through electronic direct mailers to their customers. In addition to the launch of Financial Football, Visa is working with the bank partners to distribute financial literacy brochures via their bank branches throughout the country. The brochures contain simple tips and guidelines in Bahasa Malaysia and English on money management.

The 2014 Financial Football Malaysia online competition is accessible through www.my.financialfootball.com as well as through AKPK and bank partners’ websites. Contest starts today till 16 April 2014. The top ten scorers will be invited to compete at the Grand Final on 23 April for a chance to win the trip to Brazil to watch a match at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Open to all Malaysians aged 18 and above, permanent residents of Malaysia, or those who hold a Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) status, the competition uses an educational video game accompanied by a classroom curriculum and is entirely skills-based.

Today’s launch was hosted by local radio and TV personality Adam Carruthers, or perhaps better known as Adam C, who is also a host of Astro SuperSport. The event was also graced by Malaysian football legend and former national captain, Dato’ Soh Chin Aun and current national footballer Zaquan Adha.
